So, a good friend of mine who owns a brand specific salvage yard in tennessee, has put together a contract for the eventual purchase their 4th salvage yard, in Washington State. Their second yard is in Kansas City. and 3rd is in Billings, Montana. I realized this actually makes a bit of a ‘route.’ Because he/we can, he is assembling a rally of sorts.

In reality, it’s more of a jalopy road trip/roleplay (we’re going post apocalytic like.) But at his yard in Tennessee there are ~400 salvage cars with titles. We’ve put together 3 teams to each build a vehicle that can carry at least 2 people. They are supposed make the drive without using hotels, stopping for supplies (food, water, toiletries), and are graded using guidelines set out by the organizer.

The nice piece of this, is the drive will actually use the same routes as his weekly inter-yard shipments, so large multi-car haulers will be available to (eventually) collect any breakdowns and deposit them in the yards if they are not fixable.

While the rally isnt for ~5 months, my team has already found our vehicle. A 1974 4x4 Ford C750 with a 391CI engine ‘FT’ engine according to it’s dataplate, with a 4 barrel carb. It’s a former firetruck, with some horrid 5 speed automatic allison transmission, and quite possibly the worst brake master cylinder design on the planet. But it’s had it’s back stripped off, and we’re adapting a cargo box from a boxvan to it, along with stuffing some modern mil-style tires on it. Pictures will be forthcoming once we roll it out of the dark workshop area, but it’s pretty much the most madmax thing ever, with those looted super singles stuffed under it.

Boiling it down, I was thinking of live streaming the drive, and maybe putting together a video about the build. Does Oppo think that would be interesting?

Well it sounds cool to me. I also just realized my friends suck.

What are the rules for this rally? And what do you get for winning other than excessive pride? Sounds rather interesting to hear more about!

It’s all for fun, but we may make it a thing every time he opens a yard, and assemble some company sponsored prizes, For now, it’s just a car-guy semi-adventure/role play.

Since it’s not a competition, the rules are probably ‘road legal.. enough’ and ‘mostly junkyard stuff.’ I know we’re going to have to carry everything we need supply wise, and we are camping out instead of staying in hotels. Barring severe weather, etc.

I was thinking of a ‘journal’ format for the post-adventure writeup, with snippets of video and small bits of streaming/periscope fun for when we get near cities.

Yeah, I'd absolutely like to see a writeup on this. Kind of like a modern version of Junkyard Wars mixed with a Top Gear challenge.
